Project Narrative & Scope

Public health initiatives require proactive measures to control vector-borne diseases, particularly in high-traffic facilities where vulnerable populations gather daily. To address the risk of vector transmission, the Lions Club of Mawanella organized a comprehensive sanitation and cleanup drive at the Mawanella Hospital premises. The primary objective of this intervention was to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites and significantly reduce the risk of dengue transmission within the facility and the surrounding community. The cleanup operation targeted high-risk zones across the hospital campus, including overgrown vegetation, clogged drainage pathways, discarded containers, and areas prone to stagnant water accumulation. Given that Mawanella Hospital serves as a central healthcare hub hosting more than 1,000 visitors, patients, and medical personnel daily, maintaining a vector-free environment is critical to preventing hospital-acquired vector exposure and stopping potential localized outbreaks. The Lions Club of Mawanella successfully coordinated with several external organizations, fostering a unified community response to public health safety. Volunteers worked systematically to clear debris, unblock waterways, and apply preventive measures to eliminate larval habitats. Beyond the physical cleanup, the collaborative effort raised civic awareness regarding vector control, demonstrating the impact of cross-organizational partnerships in maintaining safe, hygienic public spaces.
