The Visionary Behind The Legacy

Melvin Jones

The Man Who Changed The World

In 1917, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader named Melvin Jones asked a simple, yet world-changing question: "What if these men, who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?"

At the time, business clubs were purely for networking and financial gain. Melvin’s vision was a radical departure—an organization dedicated entirely to unselfish service. His local business circle agreed, and Lions Clubs International was born.

Our Global Mission

CORE PHILOSOPHY

More than a phrase.
We Serve.

It is the unwavering philosophy that drives everything we do. Our ethical code defines what it means to be a Lion in every community around the world.

Integrity

"To show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service."

Fairness

"To remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients and true to myself."

Compassion

"To aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy without seeking personal reward."

Our Core Pillars

Guided by purpose.
United in service.

At Lions International, our commitment to humanitarian work is powered by shared principles that define who we are and inspire how we serve global and local communities.

By embracing diverse talents and unifying unique perspectives, we deepen our understanding of community needs and broaden the scope of our compassionate action.
